Cedar Rapids, IOWA – According to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department officials, this incident occurred around 12:17 a.m. early Sunday morning.
It happened in the 300 block of 5th Avenue Southeast.
Cedar Rapids Fire Department crews responded to a report of a residential structure fire.
The responding crews saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the 9th floor that quickly spread to the 10th.
Firefighters reportedly used a combination of external firefighting apparatus including high-rise ladders, and suppression systems in the building to attack the fire.
A total building evacuation was required, officials said.
An unknown number of residents were taken to local hospitals for treatment of smoke exposure and medical issues.
No injuries to firefighters were reported, officials said.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
