Fort Atkinson holds national significance as a military post dating back to the 1840s and is now under the management of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources as a state preserve.
The site boasts a collection of original buildings, including barracks and a gunpowder house, alongside archaeologically significant artifacts.
Funding for the repair project is sourced in part from a grant awarded by the Save America’s Treasures program, administered through the Historic Preservation Fund by the National Parks Service, Department of the Interior, as well as contributions from the Friends of Fort Atkinson.
