Johnston, IOWA – According to the city officials, today, beginning at 9 a.m., the northbound lane on Merle Hay Road will be closed.
City officials have announced that this is the first closure of the NW Johnston Drive and Merle Hay Road reconstruction project.
On Friday, at 9 p.m., Merle Hay Road will close both north and sound bound lanes and reopen Monday, May 16, at 5 a.m.
The closure is necessary to install sanitary sewer across the roadway.
Officials said that this project involves the reconfiguration and reconstruction of Merle Hay Road and NW Johnston Drive intersection from the north edge of Beaver Creek Bridge north to approximately NW 55th Avenue.
This project is part of the city’s efforts to improve roadway safety, traffic flow, improve the deteriorating roadway surface and improve overall drainage in the immediate vicinity of the project.

The project will consist of PCC Pavement, ACC Asphalt overlay, sidewalk and shared-use path, water-main improvements, storm sewer, sub-drains, sanitary sewer, sanitary manholes, storm sewer manholes and intakes, pavement markings, and surface restoration.
Motorists will see message boards near the off-ramps and along Merle Hay Road, alerting drivers of the traffic pattern change on Wednesday, May 11, after 9 a.m.
