The federal government plans to send $103 million to Iowa to help families buy groceries this summer

Davenport, IA – According to the statement, the funds are expected to help feed 276,000 Iowa children from low- and moderate-income families in the state.

The money will come from the recently passed $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan.

The Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer program, or P-EBT was established in March 2020 to provide food dollars to families to make up for meals missed when schools have closed due to COVID-19.

Families who have low enough incomes to qualify their children for free or reduced school lunches during the 2020-21 school year, or who qualify for the regular Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, can expect to receive about $375 total per child over the summer months.

When the funds are issued, the temporary assistance will come loaded on an EBT card that can be used like a debit card to purchase food.

The program is expecting to disburse nearly $13 billion nationally to help feed more than 30 million children.
