Burglar killed man and his wife while their 2-year-old son was inside the home and stabbed the officer who tried to take him into custody

According to the police officials, the 22-year-old suspect was arrested on Friday. Police said he killed a man and his wife and stabbed a police officer after he tried to take him into custody. The suspect ran toward the officer and stabbed him repeatedly in the back and neck. A second officer shot the suspect in an attempt to stop the stabbing.

The 22-year-old man from Georgia, Matthew Lanz, is accused of killing Justin Thompson Hicks and Amber Hicks at their home on Wednesday night. Authorities said the suspect also burglarized at least two homes on Friday and stabbed the officer who confronted him. After attempting to subdue the suspect with a taser, the suspect ran toward the officer and stabbed him repeatedly in the back and neck. A second officer shot the suspect in an attempt to stop the stabbing.

According to reports, officers  discovered Justin and Amber dead from gunshot wounds after responding to their family home on Thursday around 9:45 a.m.. Their 2-year-old toddler was found unharmed.

Around 8:45 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a home on Cameron Glen Drive. The responding officers located the 22-year-old suspect and confronted him inside the home.

According to reports, after attempting to subdue the suspect with a taser, the suspect reportedly ran toward one officer and stabbed him multiple times. A second officer shot the suspect in an attempt to stop the stabbing.

The injured officers was taken to a hospital for treatment. The 22-year-old suspect was also taken to a hospital for treatment. Residents of the home where the suspect was caught were reportedly uninjured. 

Investigators identified Lanz as the suspect in Wednesday’s double homicide and charged him with the crime on Saturday following his Friday arrest. The 22-year-old man is facing 41 charges following his alleged crime spree.

Family members started a GoFundMe Page for the Hicks to cover the funeral and childcare costs. As of Monday afternoon, more than $51,520 has been donated toward the cause. This story will be updated as new information become available.
